Tharandt

Tharandt Forest Botanical Garden (1)

Botanical garden with large selection of rare cultivated trees. Extended in 2001 to become a forest plantation with North American specimens ranging from sequoia to Indian Summer.

Freital Municipal Collections (2)

History of the local anthracite coal industry (mining heritage site, open-air presentation on Wismut mining) together with the development of art in Dresden during the 19th/20th-centuries (including nine paintings by Otto Dix).

Karl May Museum (3)

‘Silberbüchse’ (Silver Gun) and ‘Bärentöter’ (Bear Killer), the original rifles used by Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, are on display at Villa ‘Shatterhand’ in the faithfully restored rooms where the author Karl May lived and worked.

Schloss Wackerbarth vineyard and visitors centre (4)

The baroque-style palace and gardens nestling below the vineyards together with the modern winemaking (still or sparkling) and bottling plant are the perfect setting for enjoyable tasting sessions, lively celebrations and individually packaged events.
